Feb 2020: bakerstreet discussion post

discussion post banner

It has been some time since one of these last were up, and there are several things we'll like to bring up:

First, we would like to thank the people who have occasionally bought paid time for the community.

Second, just a quick reminder of some rules:

• The comm runs on EST time, so take that into account when posting please.
• Do include the comm name you're linking to when making crossposts, as this makes it easier to see everything at a glance
• When posting multiple memes, the limit is two per post.
• The two weeks rule for posting counts by adding 14 days after the day posted. Say you posted on the 10th, the next time the meme can go up would be the 24th. The posting day does not count as one of the 14 days

*bull; ETA Keeping longer memes under a cut, and header images under 500 px wide as a courtesy to other players

For memes that break the rules, if there are few comments, we will likely just contact the poster and delete the post in question. Otherwise, we will just contact the poster know.

However since this has never been laid out explicitly before - we're thinking of fully implementing a consequence system that starts with warnings, before soft banning. Say 1 warning, then a 3 month ban. Repeated behaviour will result in longer bans afterwards.

ETA: From this point on

Third, if anyone has input towards combination memes versus individual memes such some of the specific shipping memes (ie. Opposites attract vs cheerful/grumpy & light/dark individually), or some of the picture prompt memes that have been coming up. I know some of them have been combined, though we still have ones that are separated.

Input would be appreciated

Fourth, meme ideas people want to see.

For example, there's the recent ship texts meme that seems to have come up for Valentine's day, would any of you enjoy other holiday memes?

Another suggestion that there be some kind of sexts from last night meme separate from the regular TFLN or Sexting meme

And last, any other feedback, opinions or suggestions you'll like to bring up. [Thread]

could you make it a rule that memes with excessively long premises/prompt lists be under a cut? if players only scroll a certain distance maybe that'd help keep memes in play longer.

similar to the above comment, I think that the "how to play" and scenarios should all be under a cut. most of the memes are repeated and frequent players know what's up, so a simple eye-catching premise above the cut is probably enough to get people to click in for more information.

in the same vein, it would be nice if entry titles included more descriptive names. personally, I like using the page summary on the side rather than scrolling all the way to the bottom, and some of the titles are vague puns that don't help explain what I'm looking at. this might be hard to enforce from a mod standpoint, but it's just a suggestion!

also, I think a dimension limit on images would help clear up the scrolling experience. I'm talking like 400px max. sometimes a really tall image can take up nearly the entire page depending on screen resolution, and wide ones can break the layout. again, personally, the images aren't what draw me into a meme, so they're more distracting than useful.

there is a dimension limit. it's on the rules page and people keep ignoring it.

i'd really like it if meme posters would take a look at the numbers on memes before reposting. it feels like certain people are on their own schedules and are just reposting because they want to, not because it's a meme we haven't seen in a while or a meme that gets any play. there are repeat offenders of memes that get zero play and keep being shoved into rotation. or memes that used to get more play but someone is too thirsty for it and they've shoved it into the biweekly rotation and now people are over it because it used to be a rare meme.

things are being posted ad nauseum, and it's making it so people aren't even really giving a shit about memes anymore. not to mention the odd freakouts about the ones that defy the status quo. like the kh roll call meme hosted off comm. the roll call meme could easily be posted, and probably will be soon, but someone had to make a fuss about someone doing something one time for a specific purpose to draw attention to a place off comm.

people are getting too catty over memes. i see reports for the dumbest most pedantic shit. like musedumping. yes, we're tired of musedumping, but it doesn't break rules and they're not taking away from anyone by posting. some people come off feeling weirdly territorial about an open public comm and want it run in a way that best suits them and they forget about the fact that it's on a site with people playing on it across the world and a lot of people have different preferences. there are rules in place that have been in place since the comm's inception, and there's no reason to keep trying to slam more and more limitations on it when people are already shying away from it. nothing's going to 'infuse new life' at this point. but it would help if people would actually pay attention to what they're doing. check your meme numbers before you post. check what memes are up. if something that's similar is up and you want to play xyz, then go play xyz in that meme and don't throw up v.2 of a meme just because it has a specific prompt for xyz. that's what comments are for. state your preferences in them and you might actually get what you want.

signed,
a burned out meme poster/player.

On longer memes, for example our extreme kink meme just recently, there's a lot of repeat prompts on there. I'd just like it if meme posters looked through their copy/paste and cleaned up a bit, that's all. Nothing major!

Mingle memes?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
This might be a better fit for meme ideas, IDK, but since it's sort of a mod question I put it here: Would memes that are more like mingles be okay? Like "here's the setting/what's going on, post what your character might be doing and respond to others" similar to mingles in games just... not in a game.
