Totally understandable, though I wouldn't say that you jumped the gun.

This is pretty much the same meme as Unconventional Couple on the same page.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
in addition to the above mention of unconventional couple and crack pairing, i feel like these also fall into done already in their own way.

https://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/4961029.html - risky rendezvous (with age difference/ mommy/daddy option)

https://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/4968377.html - milf/dilf

honestly, it's starting to feel like either people aren't looking to see what's on bs already that's similar to what they put up, or they're just going ahead and posting their meme up without giving a crap that there's one up already like it because 'it's been a week, fuck off'.

it's starting to get increasingly frustrating to go to the comm and see the entire first page have multiple versions of the same shit.

messaged this poster about their font with no change to the meme or reply.

Is this problem getting more common or has it always been about the same?

I'm trying to figure out if some meme posters are now deliberately trying to be idiots because we've asked them to pay attention to the font/background colors.

For instace, has the Breeding meme been readable before but not this time?

We could start banning them although banning a sock account is never a long-lasting solution.

You're probably not going to like what I say but I don't think a meme should be off limits just because it has one or two prompts that another meme has. We couldn't have any memes for a week after Random Scenario if we took that stand.

May I ask what types of memes would you like to see if you think Bakerstreet now has nothing but the same (of something you don't like)?

i don't recall having had a problem with that meme before. it's not overposted, so it doesn't come up much, but i used to at least be able to see the meme title itself without having to highlight.

i think it's mostly happening at the same level, which isn't too often, but people are just used to c/ping and if it doesn't affect them, they don't see it. as in, i doubt it's intentional, but if they don't have a dark background, they can preview it all they want and it won't look amiss. because half of them are just c/ping old memes, they don't think to double check. i don't know why they didn't bother replying, but for the most part, the few i've contacted have altered it soon after.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-14 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
it's less that i want to see and more of just scrolling through the first few pages and seeing that there's the same flavor of meme being reposted to death and the comment count on them dwindling. those memes used to get a lot of hits, but people are forcing and toeing that every week limit and killing any interest in it. most of the memes themselves are fine on their own, but when you have, and i'll open bs now and take a look:

interspecies and crack pairing right above each other and then the unconventional couple down a bit. they follow the same theme and don't need to be posted so closely together.

what you can never have, deserve to be happy, stolen moments, unspoken thing - they all carry the same sort of tone, so for them to all be on the first page is just too much. the problem is that they are fun memes to play in, but they're just being done to death. and people aren't bothering anymore. look at the archives and the difference in comment counts from this year to last. look at the posting rate as well. it's ticked up quite a bit with people overswamping with certain themes all at once and it just puts people off the comm.

the worst problem is that it's not your guys' fault or on you. it's the meme posters as a whole. i really think there needs to be a conversation had between the meme posters and the comm mods about just learning some chill. because it comes down to meme posters wanting what they want exactly how they want it when they want it and posting their meme regardless of what's already up that they might be able to also play in, but no, that's an old icky used meme, i want a clean fresh one.

it's stupid.

Thanks for your lengthy reply.

"it comes down to meme posters wanting what they want exactly how they want it when they want it"

That's both the strength and the weakness of Bakerstreet, in my opinion.

This seems like a case of you (not just you but others as well) seeing more similarities in things that others (me included) don't see. And because of that, it's not a solution to change our 'one week meme rule' into a two week (or even a three week) rule.

It's easy to ban/delete a meme that is exactly the same. It gets trickier when they are almost the same.

A new rule wouldn't stop you from seeing the similarities. I'm definitely not saying you're wrong but you are looking at memes from a different perspective. I don't know if there's some amount of meme boredome going on, as well (for many of you). If you've been here long, you've probably "played in all the memes with all of your characters" already and therefore are quicker to label them samey and repetitive.

I wish I had a good solution but I don't, and I have been thinking about this for quite a lot.

https://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/4978064.html = pet person off comm

https://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/4978339.html = cat ears

come on. this is literally within an hour. it may not be 'the exact same', but it's fucking close enough that they could have waited a couple days.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed. people aren't even trying at this point.
1800: (janeausten)

[personal profile] 1800 2018-05-18 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I took down the second one.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I have concerns about cat ears being deleted because it was a completely different type of meme. It was much more about suddenly gaining animal traits and dealing with them, while Pet Person is more of a kink/smut-oriented AU about existing animal traits and a setting that engages with them. I'd prefer if both versions were allowed in the future as they cater to different types of threads.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
If they're "almost the same", they should still get deleted. People are specifically making memes only a hair different from existing ones in order to not get shitcanned

There's no need for four different flavors of the pregnancy meme just because they all focus on different stages of pregnancy– they're still a pregnancy meme. There's no need for six different "opposites attract" memes when they're the same at their core

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Even if some of the prompts aren't the same, there's almost always a "Option #Whatever: make your own prompt". People can use that instead of deciding to post yet another derivative meme just because Hidden Secret Can't Say Love Meme #4 didn't have an option for closet sex when Clandestine Zip-It Fluffy Love Meme had one

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
oh come on.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
anon, it's not about them not being able to exist in the same week. it's about them literally being posted an hour apart and it's a visible proof that people just aren't looking at what's up before they post. let it go for at least a day or two. let there be space. they were literally on top of each other and we don't need fifty thousand variants of the same shit. there's an au meme up. there's a random scenario meme up. post with animal things there. a meme shouldn't have to cater specifically to exactly what you want. that's why we're getting swamped with the same shit all the time, page after page, but with a bit of a twist.

They are both allowed but since 'animal traits' is in itself a very specific type of meme already, there is no need to have them posted almost at the same time.

hate pointing another one out, but i messaged two memes and one was altered and they replied to me and another hasn't altered it or replied.

https://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/4986715.html black font with no contrast. and no, it didn't used to be like that. i used to be able to read that meme.

Contacted the poster with a code workaround.

https://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/4976660.html - interspecies smut meme, posted on May 17
https://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/4985483.html - interspecies love meme, posted on May 21

I understand that the difference between 'smut' and 'not smut' might be enough to keep both memes up, but other than that, they're practically the same meme
